Receiving positive attention, being liked, affirmation & praise, maybe even find romance and fame-- all very important things on his list of things to do in life that he just wasn't succeeding in. Ultimately, he wanted to better himself-- to be a better person so maybe he could even genuinely appreciate himself instead of just fooling everyone.
